Fidel Diaz Castro

Education and Career

Díaz graduated in Audiovisual Media Art from the Higher Institute of Art (ISA) in 1997. He has been a journalist, writer, and director for various publications and media outlets, including Somos Jóvenes, El Caimán Barbudo, and La Jiribilla. He has also been a member of the Hermanos Saíz Association since 1986 and has held various positions, including provincial president and member of the National Directorate.

Literary Work and Awards

Díaz has published several books, including "The Illustrated Devil" (2003), "Confessions of El Diablo Ilustrado" (2006), and "Any flower of the Traditional Cuban Trova" (2006). He has received awards for his writing, including the Pablo de la Torriente Brau Center Award, the Cubadisco 2013 Honor Award, and the National Prize for Cultural Journalism in 1996.

Music and Troubadour Work

Díaz is also a musician and troubadour, and has released two personal albums, "The Voice of the Illustrated Devil" (2008) and "Los amores del Diablo Ilustrado" (2018). He has been a member of the Musicuba Company catalog and has received awards for his music, including the Cubadisco 2012 Honor Award.

Television and Radio Work

Díaz has worked in television and radio, writing and directing programs for Canal Habana and Radio Cadena Habana. He has also received awards for his work in radio, including the National Radio Festival prize in 1989 and the Abril Award in 1990.

Erdwin Vichot is a renowned Cuban musician, singer, and composer with a career spanning over three decades. Born in Cuba, Erdwin began his musical journey at a young age, influenced by the country's rich cultural heritage.

Throughout his career, Erdwin has participated in numerous national and international festivals, concerts and events, showcasing his talent and passion for music. He has collaborated with various artists and groups, including Albita Rodríguez, Cheo Feliciano, and Mario Darías, and has recorded multiple albums that have received critical acclaim.

Erdwin Vichot has been recognized for his contributions to Cuban music and culture, receiving awards and distinctions such as the Cultural Butterfly Award, the Rubén Martínez Villena Distinction, and the Cuban Flag Award. He has also been featured on TV and radio programs and has performed at prestigious venues and events.

In addition to his musical career, Erdwin has been involved in various cultural and artistic projects, including literary groups, art exhibitions, and conferences. He has also taught music and has been a jury member for music competitions.

Dimarys Aguila

A Multi-Talented Cuban Writer and Poet

Dimarys Águila García is a Cuban writer, poet, journalist, and teacher born in  Güira de Melena, Artemisa, Cuba. She has made significant contributions to Cuban literature and culture, and her work has been recognized internationally.

Education and Career

Dimarys graduated in English Language and Literature and has worked as a journalist, writer, and poet. She is a member of various literary organizations, including the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC), the Cuban Musical Copyright Agency (ACDAM), and the World Poets Association (WPA).

Literary Work and Awards

Dimarys has published several books of poetry, including "Delirios del diablo" (2011), "Al Derecho y al Vés" (2019), "El secreto de los parks" (2019), and "In four walls" (2020). Her work has been translated into multiple languages, including English, Chinese, Uzbek, Urdu, Turkish, Russian, and Swedish. She has received numerous awards for her writing, including the International Prize "The 14k Gold Pen" (2021), the Literary Archive Award (2022), and the Special Prize at the European Poetry Championship (2024).

Dimarys has taught literary workshops and coordinated community projects, including the Provincial Literary Workshop of Artemisa province and the UNEAC Community Culture Office. Ismael de la Torre

 A Masterful Singer-Songwriter and Musician

Ismael De La Torre is a highly acclaimed singer-songwriter, composer, producer, and guitarist with a remarkable 30-year career. He has successfully fused traditional Cuban Trova with the New Song, creating innovative and avant-garde rhythms and sounds.

De La Torre's music is a rich blend of Guaracha, Son, Samba, Pop, and other genres, which he skillfully combines to evoke powerful emotions. His poetic lyrics, infused with melancholy and harmony, are brought to life by his distinctive, cracked, and refined voice.

He has released three albums: "Huella", "Mi trova es Cuba" (2017), and "500 Habanas" (2019). De La Torre has performed in numerous concerts worldwide, including in Angola, Paris, Toronto, Caracas, Havana, Buenos Aires, New York, Medellín, Mexico, and Madrid.

Ray Fernandez

A Poet-Turned-Troubadour with a Voice for Truth

Ray Fernandez's journey as a musician began unexpectedly, transitioning from a chef to a poet and eventually to a troubadour. His deep, clear voice and poignant lyrics have captivated audiences, offering a critical and intelligent perspective on Cuban politics reality.

Early Beginnings

Fernandez started writing poems, which a friend encouraged him to set to music. He taught himself guitar and began performing on the Havana Malecón, singing for tips. He also started playing at the House of Culture in Alamar and met fellow troubadours Eduardo Sosa and Vladimir Zamora, leading to gigs at clubs and festivals.

Music and Message

Ray Fernandez's music is characterized by scathing prose, criticizing social issues like corruption and inequality. Songs like "La Yuca," "El obrero," "El gerente," "Matarife," and "Mamá, ando contento" offer biting commentary on the reality of creative life in Cuba. Yet, his repertoire also includes humorous and optimistic tunes, showcasing his versatility.

Raul Torres

 Raúl Torres Rondón was born in Bayamo, Cuba. Raised in a family that valued music, art, and culture, he developed a passion for music from a young age. His sister Elba, a writer, actress, and director, played a significant role in supporting his creative journey.

Early Beginnings

Torres' musical journey began in high school, where he sang in a duet and performed in an amateur group. He also worked as a prop and lighting technician, gaining valuable experience in the production of shows. He studied guitar and honed his craft, observing and learning from others to become the accomplished composer and performer he is today.

Breakthrough

At 21, Torres performed his first concert in Matanzas (1987). A year later, through Lynn Milanés, he sent a recording of his music to Pablo Milanés, which led to an invitation to perform alongside him in 1989. This debut at the National Theater marked the beginning of his successful career, sharing the stage with renowned artists like Pablo Milanés, Simone, Fito Páez, Ana Belén, Joaquín Sabina, and Los Van Van.

Yassel Rubalcaba

Instrumentalist musician (trumpet) composer and music producer

Born in Havana, Cuba, Rubalcaba is the descendant of a family of prestigious Cuban musicians, among whom his grandfather Guillermo Rubalcaba and his uncle, the multi-laurel Gonzalo Rubalcaba, stand out.

Founder of Yassel Rubalcaba Orquesta Sabor y Mas. Debuting in the Cuban musical Pentagram on January 19, 2017, at the tribute concert to his grandfather in the Rosado Hall of the Tropical.

Together with his orchestra he has performed on the main stages within Cuba and collaborated with several orchestras and international artists, where the Son Borojol International Orchestra of the Dominican Republic and the composer Gerald Cruz of New York City stand out.

In 2020 he presented himself online at the 2nd Continental Forum of Youth who contribute to world peace held in Veracruz. He won the Honorary Mention Leader 2020 and was recognized for his work and contribution to Latin American music.

He was nominated in 2023 for the 94.7 FM Star Night Awards in New York City, where he was recognized for his contribution from Cuba to the Salsa genre. And recently he was recognized by the media Dtokado tv in Ecuador for his work as a music producer.

He has been a producer of artists such as Álex Anton of the Dominican group Sandy y Papo, Héctor Cuevas and Son Borojol, Cruz Isaac, for the Ecuadorian multimedia Dtokado tv, Abdala productions and the label Colibrí with his Disco Comienza that collects part of the unpublished popular music of Agustín Díaz Cartaya.

Rubalcaba has been sworn on several events and festivals in Cuba such as the competition that Alfredo Sadel sponsored by the embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in Cuba. In 2019 he was recognized by the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Havana for his outstanding participation as a jury in the Mariana de Gonich singing contest.

Danielle Boissoneau

A 2Spirit Femme Anishnaabekwe Poet and Artist

Danielle is a proud member of the Old Turtle Clan,  a 2Spirit femme Anishnaabekwe from Garden River First Nation, currently residing in Hamilton. She is a poet, artist, and performer who weaves words and sound to embody her dreams of liberation and autonomy.

Artistic Practice

Danielle's artistic practice is rooted in the belief that living artistically is a form of miracle-making. She seeks to acknowledge and translate the miracles in her life into creative projects that inspire and uplift.

Performances and Publications

Danielle has performed her poetry at various venues, including Tip Confession (2019) and the Onkwehonweh Storytellers Festival (2022). Her work will also be featured in the upcoming publication, "The Languages of Our Love: An Indigenous Love and Sex Anthology" by Abalone Press, with a piece titled "Two Spirit Love".

As a member of the Old Turtle Clan, Danielle proudly carries her Anishnaabekwe heritage and traditions into her art and life. Her work is a testament to the power of Indigenous creativity and resilience.

Ernesto J. Espinoza is a Chilean-born violinist and composer who has significantly impacted the music world with his unique style and commitment to social justice. Born in Chile, he was raised in Vancouver, Canada, from the age of four, and began his musical studies at nine. He has collaborated with numerous artists and groups, exploring various genres such as Rock, Blues, Jazz, Salsa, Andean Folk, and Flamenco.

Mario Allende

Mario (Mayito) A Multitalented Musician and Educator

Mario Morello, born in Chile and raised in Canada, has been a valued member of the MJMS team since 2013. As a skilled percussionist and drummer, he brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to his teaching and performances.

Has dedicated his life to exploring and sharing the music, history and culture that surrounds him. Lauded as a studied yet emotional musician, Mario is a restlessly creative and spirited performer. A gifted educator, he manages to reach any audience, having delivered workshops to children and adults, professionals and enthusiasts across four continents. No matter the group, he manages to bring his knowledge and expertise in a manner that both engages and inspires

Mario is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Ethnomusicology at York University, further solidifying his expertise in the field.
